Grant Allen Schellhorn, 9, of rural Tripoli, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner with Rev. James Brokman officiating Interment will be at Leroy Township Cemetery, rural Sumner. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 12th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner and for one hour preceding Mass at the church on Saturday. A rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you wear red (Grant’s favorite color) if you can. A memorial fund is being established. Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoli is assisting the family.
Grant Allen Schellhorn, son of Scott and Beth Klein Schellhorn, was born February 22, 2004, at Waterloo, Iowa. He was baptized at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner and received his First Communion in the fall of 2011. Diagnosed with a brain tumor at sixteen months of age, Grant was treated at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics at Iowa City and primarily at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He was third grader at Tripoli Elementary School, and enjoyed Boy Scouts and red tractors.
In addition to his parents, Grant is survived by two brothers, Marshall and Ethan, and a sister, Nora, all at home; his maternal grandparents, Jeff and Teresa Henricks of Reinbeck; his paternal grandparents, Duane and Nina Schellhorn of Fredericksburg; maternal great grandparents, Jerry and Darlene Clark of Reinbeck and Edgar Henricks of Reinbeck; paternal great grandmother, Josephine Rochford of Sumner; aunts; uncles; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandmothers, Marietta Henricks and Muretta Klein; and paternal great grandparents, Jim Rochford and Rudy and Lorena Schellhorn.
